RePo-SUDOE brings bioinformatics and drug repurposing closer to the public at Cullerciencia 2025

The RePo-SUDOE project was one of the highlights of Cullerciencia 2025, the science outreach fair held this Saturday on the O Burgo promenade (Culleredo).

Throughout the day, the project team, coordinated by the CITIC of the University of A Coruña (UDC), presented to the public the latest advances in bioinformatics aimed at repurposing existing drugs for new therapeutic applications.

During the workshop “What is bioinformatics?”, led by researchers Carlos Fernández Lozano and Lucía Martínez Rodríguez, attendees learned firsthand how computational tools can accelerate the identification of new uses for already approved drugs. This approach, known as drug repurposing, offers a faster and more cost-effective path for developing innovative treatments, particularly for rare diseases or those lacking effective therapeutic options.

RePo-SUDOE’s participation in Cullerciencia 2025 highlighted the importance of bringing biomedical research closer to society and fostering interest in the potential of bioinformatics to improve health. The workshop generated strong public interest, underscoring the project’s role in knowledge transfer and in promoting transnational cooperation across Southwestern Europe.

The RePo-SUDOE project is part of the Interreg Sudoe programme, which fosters cooperation between entities in Spain, France, and Portugal in key areas for the region’s sustainable and innovative development.
